I had the pleasure of working with Steven last summer. His tasks working with me included learning about our community, engaging with department directors within our local government to learn about their departments and services offered, and working to identify new and creative ideas to improve our website. We thank ENCIP for allowing us the chance to work with Steven.

Jess Edelson, a Robertson Scholar and rising sophomore at Duke, added a ton of value to our work in a short amount of time. We wish we could have had her for longer! The primary focus of her work was on improving our branding, marketing, and communications as a means for driving community engagement and strengthening participation in ROI's programs. Jess built strong relationships with many of our community partners, and was able to create several deliverables that have been immediately useful to us. She even represented ROI at a "hackathon" event at Blue Cross Blue Shield during which she worked with a team of communications experts at BCBS to build out a communications strategy and materials.
-VICHI, Rural Opportunity Institute
Beryl took on multiple projects during her eight weeks as an intern in ECPS: she supported the expansion of our micro school by conducting research and developing recommendations for programming; developed marketing materials for the school district; and collaborated with a local psychologist to raise funds for adaptive furniture and classroom materials at a local elementary school. Beryl worked on each of these projects with fervor and minimal supervision; she was given the vision, and she developed and followed through on a detailed plan of action. In every case, the products she created exceeded our expectations – they were practical, professional, and highly aligned to the goals of the project.
-ERIN, Edgecombe County Public Schools
Our intern, Sophia, met her objectives and did an excellent job with her final report. She was very independent and took very little supervision. She was comfortable in group/taskforce meetings, asking questions and making comments as needed. Her final report and presentation was outstanding. She was a pleasure to have on our team in summer 2019.
-Karen, Edgecombe County Health Department
Our hope is to provide interns with as much exposure to the health care system as it relates to advance care planning as possible, with occasions for interns to shadow providers, interact with seriously ill patients, participate in evidence based training on relevant issues, and engage in projects they take a part in developing. Our 2019 intern, Olivia, hosted her own community “Hello” game (an interactive tool that promotes open discussion surrounding end of life), completed local research in two skilled nursing facilities to determine staff’s level of understanding of palliative care, and created a IRB Proposal Reference Guide that can be utilized by future interns. Olivia gained personal insight into the value of openly discussing future healthcare decisions prior to a health crisis, acquiring skills that will benefit her in both her personal and professional life.
-VICKI, Vidant health
Our 2019 interns, Kenya and Jewel, were able to take the bones outlined for summer camp and bring the camp to reality. They knew what the plans were and they made calls, appointments, led/created hands-on learning opportunities, organized transportation, gathered feedback, and located funding sources. Most importantly, they functioned as a well oiled machine (reminded me of how MAGC Director Shanell and I work). When they called me with an issue, they also proposed their planned solution. If I had to turn summer camp over to a team of young ladies for MAGC, they would be a part of that team.
-CHRISTINE, Michael's Angels Girls Club
The ENCIP interns have been a vital addition to our summer Freedom School academic enrichment program. They have brought great energy, passion, and work ethic each summer. There is no doubt that we have been able to have a greater impact in the lives of the children we serve because of our partnership with ENCIP.
